Destination: Louisville, Kentucky
Looavul, Luhvul, Loueville, Looaville, Looeyville or Louisville, no matter how you pronounce it or spell it, the town has always held a special magic for me. As a very young service man, I had my first legal adult beverage there, saw Bo Diddley knocking out some nasty rock and roll at the Blue Note club and was in town for the Kentucky Derby. Whenever we had any leave time of any duration, we would pile into someone's wheels, say goodbye to Fort Knox and head for Looavul.
I don't go to Lohvul to visit my old barracks anymore, but I do go to hang out in this most interesting town and play some golf. The last time there I visited Kentucky Center for the Arts, Louisville Slugger Museum and the Star of Louisville. I stayed at the Galt House, which is right downtown and near many of the attractions.
The Greater Louisville Getaway Package for 2002-2003 features six golf courses an executive course and a nine-hole course and more lodging facilities than you can shake a suitcase at, 18 all told. You can find all of the information you need at http://gotolouisville.com. They also sent me a packet of information that made my planning very easy.
Out of the six properties highlighted in the brochure, I have only been to three, Hidden Creek, which is actually in Indiana, just before the bridge to Louisville, the May Wood GC which was mentioned as one of the best new courses of 1995 by Golf Digest and Quail Chase, a 27-hole track that has a four-star rating from Golf Digest. On my trip this year, I will visit The Crossings, a traditional
course built in the '50s, the Old Capital Club, a semi-private club and Indian Spring a three-star rated championship layout.
