(BELLAIRE - 10/9) Michigan Travel Director Susy Avery, members of her staff and the flat out beautiful Shanty Creek Resort, welcomed over 300 members of the Michigan tourism industry to the Michigan Tourism Conference in early October. Basically, what the conferees learned was that:

...the Internet has become a major player in delivering information about our state's tourist products. According to Dave Morris, of Travel Michigan, 75% of the requests for information now comes to the Travel Office from the Web. Travel Michigan, the state's Web site http://michigan.org is getting some serious traffic. They backed up that little tidbit of news by headlining such technology luminaries at their conference such as, Richard Snyder, former CEO of Gateway and now the president of Avalon Investments, Inc.; James Canton, president of the Institute for Global Futures and formerly an executive with Apple Computer; Richard Wiggins, senior information technologist at MSU; and Paul Schutt, of The Collective, a Web company. It was Marketing 101 for everybody.

...the state is continuing to point to Indianapolis, Green Bay/Appleton, Chicago and Cleveland as their main targets. The state abandoned their Minneapolis and Toronto program two yeas ago and have been pouring their advertising dollars into these markets.

...Welcome Centers and the WATTS line will continue their excellent work. The state has been aggressive in revamping and remodeling the Welcome Centers for the past couple of years. In addition, the blue sign campaign has been a big-time hit. Finally, those nice folks at Prince Edward Island in Canada have been doing a great job answering phone calls from all over.

On the golf side, the department indicated they will:

...continue with television ads on network and cable, continue to purchase advertising in Golf Digest, Golf and Sports Illustrated/Golf and continue with their direct piece in early April. They are pointing to a media event in Cleveland in February, where they will attend the IMG Golf Expo. Also, Don Wyckoff, of Golf Michigan is heralding the Annual Spring Meeting of ING, an organization of golf media and industry types. They will be meeting in the Gaylord area in mid May.
