Border Golf

by Art McCafferty

Lots of things are happening on the eastern part of Michigan and the western side of Ontario. The housing and business boom of Metro Detroit continues with abandon up the I-94 Detroit to Port Huron corridor as M-59 and US-23 are becoming a new Metro Detroit beltway.

During our tour we stopped by or talked to people from 48 different public courses in the two counties and Ontario areas. Generally, we found that golf is alive and extremely strong in these communities. We found wonderful new courses that are coming on board and many that are maturing to become the type of courses the architects dreamed about when they were on the drawing boards.

According to the Royal Canadian Golf Association's latest survey, an estimated one million Canadians have taken up golf in the last seven years. This gives Canada one of the highest per capita golf participation rates in the world. This trend was very prevalent in the Sarnia area, as nine hole courses have expanded to 18 and new course developing is rising.
